SINTER KLAUSEN CURRENT NEWS! —
Sinter Klausen Christmas Markt in Germantown, WI will be closing after 31 years in business. The charming German gift shop is designed after the world-famous “Christkindlemarkts” (Christmas Markets) in Germany and features German mouth-blown glass ornaments, nutcrackers, smokers, hand-carved nativity sets, and more.
Owner Irene Blau, a well-known Germantown businesswoman and historian, has always been focused on celebrating her own German heritage and Christmas traditions, as well as researching past ethnic roots in the Germantown community. At the young age of 90, Irene is finally embracing the thought of slowing down, retiring and enjoying family life.
Sinter Klausen Christmas Markt will celebrate its final year with storewide sales all season and officially close its doors December 31, 2019.
SINTER KLAUSEN HISTORY — (Sinter Klausen = St. Nicholas in Dutch)
On July 1, 1998 we opened our small Christmas Markt in a 1879 quarry worker;s home on Old World Main Street, Germantown, Wisconsin and celebrated “Christmas in July”. It began an adventure which focused as a community identity of our German roots and my own long-time research on the holiday traditions.
After the trip to Germany at the beginning of December to visit Christkindl Markts. I designed a shop patterned after a famous Nurenberg Marketplace, filled it with all the original artisan’s creations from the Ertz Mountains (know in America as Victorian) and have been sharing the stories since opening day!
Most popular are Nutcrackers & Smoking Man made for over 300 years in the mountains and sparkling glass ornaments by Dresden glass-makers. Their patterns and molds are still used from the early 1600’s and expanded to include pyramid trees. 1800’s feather trees, 1910 angels by artisans Wendt & Kuhn and traditional wood-carved Nativity figures from the Alpine mountains of Oberammergan.
